My father died suddenly of a heart attack at 54 years old. My brother died at the young age of 38 due to a sudden cardiovascular event.

My father’s first cousins all died of sudden heart attacks. None of them ever made it to the age of 55. I was told that my paternal grandmother died at the age of 42, in 1947, from what is described as a cardiovascular event.

Cardiac disease is very personal to me.

It has destroyed my family and I know it has taken the lives of many of your loved ones.

Heart disease is a tricky villain. Living in India, my father was very active. He looked like the epitome of health. He was an avid hiker. He biked to work every day. He was in great shape. He ate healthy foods. We were a very strict Sikh family, meaning no smoking, no drugs, and no alcohol. My father looked like the epitome of health. Yet, heart disease took his life anyway.

Saving lives is my mission.

In honor of my father, brother, and cousins, I have made it my personal medical mission to advocate for the South Asian community, and people everywhere, and to educate everyone I meet about heart disease – a silent killer. South Asian Americans especially have a disproportionately higher risk for heart disease. But so many people either aren’t aware of their cardiac risks or don’t take the steps necessary to mitigate the disease.

The genetic link to heart disease in my family is very clear. A molecular biologist by training, I’ve done my research and now know the genetic factors that have taken their toll on my family.

That’s why my mission is to raise awareness for preventative cardiac care.

This includes lifesaving imaging studies that can show changes inside the smallest cardiac vessels that can be red flags for heart disease present or future. Between cardiac calcium scoring, coronary CTA with Cleerly, and cardiac MRI, we have the diagnostic tools to prevent more families from suffering tragic losses like mine.

I’m working now to control my cardiac risk factors and the risks for my two adult sons. Last year, I had my own coronary CTA and calcium score tests done by my terrific staff. I am under the care of an amazing cardiologist. I eat a plant-based diet and exercise. I’m doing all I can to live well past the age of 55 like so many of my relatives were not able to do.

I’m sharing my story so that no one else must bear the pain of losing loved ones to a sudden cardiac event. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about and miss my father, brother, and family members who have been taken too soon because of undiagnosed cardiac disease. It hurts to think about all the life they missed.

Take control of your heart health now.

February is Heart Health Month: Do You Know Your Cardiac Risk?

Coronary CT Angiography With Cleerly Analysis

Charter Radiology recently introduced a specialized heart scan with AI technology called Cleery for our patients who want more insight into their heart health. Cleerly is an AI-enabled software that looks at images of your arteries to identify areas of plaque buildup. Cleerly is especially unique in its ability to identify the most dangerous kind of plaque, non-calcified plaque. Non-calcified plaque is the plaque at the highest risk of rupturing and causing a heart attack.

The Cleerly coronary analysis is a thorough evaluation of the presence, amount, and type of plaque in the heart’s arteries based on a Coronary CTA study.

We’re Leading The Way In Cardiac Imaging

Everyone benefits from the most advanced imaging technology available. That’s what you can expect at Charter Radiology. Put your heart health in our expert hands.

We offer:

  •  Cardiac Calcium Score to calculate the risk of developing coronary artery disease.
  • Coronary CT Angiographyprovides stunning 3D images of the heart and the coronary arteries, allowing us to diagnose and evaluate for blood vessel disease and coronary blockages with pinpoint accuracy.
  • Cardiac MRIcreates both still and moving images of the heart and major blood vessels.
  • Carotid Ultrasoundis utilized to assess blood flow through the carotid vessels and is also used for stroke screening.
  • Aortic Screeningsinclude abdominal and thoracic aorta screenings.
